San Juan Nepomuceno

SAN JUAN NEPOMUCENO

O Poong San Juan
Kami po ay kalugdan
Iyong tulungan at patnubayan
Itong Malibay na bayan.

Ikaw ay uliran sa kabanalan
Pag-asa namin, O San Juan
Ikaw ay uliran sa kabanalan
Pag-asa naming, O San Juan.

The song “O Poong San Juan” is one of the compositions written by my mother Mrs. Filomena Saranglao. She was the parish organist and choir teacher for many decades since the early 60’s until she passed away in the mid 90’s. My father served God through this parish as lector and Eucharistic minister in the same length of time. I, too served through this parish from the time of Mrsgr. Imquimboy to Fr. Juan Bautista as a sacristan, as an organist and later, as the music teacher for the youth choir. I still remember that when I was a young boy, I attended the ordination of Fr. Tobias who is a bishop now.

In the 70’s, we formed the youth choir called MAPYG (Malibay Apostleship of Prayer Youth Group). Vic Prado, Bobby Taylo (popular bass player with ABS-CBN), Boyet Reyles (Pasay City human resource development head), Grace Sinsay (Nurse now living in Los Angeles), Dr. Ramon Reyles, Eddie Reyles and I, Art Saranglao joined together and decided be an active part of the parish by singing in the Sunday evening masses. We needed instruments and to raise funds, we caroled many houses in Pasay City during Christmas season, until we were able to buy guitars, bongos and a tambourine. During that time too, together with Boyet Reyles, I wrote the song “Magalak sa Ama” that became a common song in the mass.

As I ponder and grasp about those years of service, I can testify that we had joy in our hearts serving and every member of this choir prospered and was blest abundantly by God. Wow, it started in this very parish. Now, I am here in Los Angeles and still continuing to serve through the music field as the head servant of the Heart of Jesus Music Ministry, a very active choir in the Archdiocese. You can see the choir in the internet www.youtube.com, just search artsaran.
